When Preservation Is No Longer an Option

Even Great Trees Don’t Last Forever
At some point, removal becomes the responsible choice—whether due to storm damage, structural failure, decline, or a tree outgrowing its space. When that time comes, the work needs to be handled with planning and precision. Tree removal is one of the highest-risk aspects of arboriculture, especially on Vermont properties, where tight spaces and nearby structures leave little margin for error.
With more than 25 years of experience in the Champlain Valley, Limbwalker approaches every removal with intention. Our ISA Certified Arborists use advanced rigging, the right equipment, and sound judgment to take trees down safely.
25+ Years of Experience
Our Tree Removal Services
We handle the full scope of removal work, from straightforward residential removals to high-stakes jobs that other crews won’t touch.
Standard Tree Removal
For most jobs, we’ll either climb the tree or use our bucket truck to take it down in a controlled manner. The right approach can depend on the tree’s size, surrounding obstacles, and what’s overhead. We’ll walk you through the complete plan during your estimate.
Hazard Tree Removal
Storm-damaged, decaying, or dead trees call for a different approach. They’ve lost the structural integrity that makes climbing safe. We’ve heavily invested in technical rigging training and use our bucket truck or self-propelled aerial lift to remove these trees without putting our crew or your property at risk.
Tight-Access & Backyard Removals
Not every tree is convenient to remove. Our self-propelled aerial lift fits through a three-foot gate and runs on tracks, allowing us to reach trees a bucket truck can’t. With heavy-duty mats to protect your lawn, we can work in tight backyards without leaving ruts behind.
Technical Rigging Removals
When a tree must come down in pieces—like over a roof, between gardens, or near power lines—technical rigging is what makes it safe. Our climbers have extensive training and continuous practice in advanced rigging techniques, which is what lets us take on jobs other companies pass on.
Large Diameter & Tall Tree Removals
We’ve toppled a 160-foot Douglas fir and a cottonwood that was 72 inches in diameter at breast height. So far, we haven’t had to turn down a job because of a tree’s size.
Removals Near Power Lines
We regularly remove trees growing into the service line that runs from the utility pole to your house, as well as trees on private property near power lines. We don’t do utility line clearance work, but residential work near wires is routine for us, so there are no special delays or scheduling complications.
Have a Tree That Needs to Come Down?
We’ll take a look and give you a clear, honest assessment. If the tree can be preserved, we’ll tell you. If removal is the right call, we’ll explain why and how we’d handle it safely.
No Guesswork. No Surprises.
What to Expect When You Hire Limbwalker
Here's how a typical removal goes from first call to final cleanup.
On-Site Consultation
A Certified Arborist evaluates the tree, site conditions, and access. You'll get a clear explanation of options and any additional concerns we see on the property.
Written Proposal
Following the visit, you’ll receive a written estimate with a clear scope of work. If there are choices to be made, such as keeping the wood versus hauling it away, they’ll be in writing, so you can make the best decision for your budget.
Scheduling & Permits
Upon the proposal's approval, we’ll get you scheduled. If your project requires a Vermont Shoreland Protection Act permit, we’ll start that process as quickly as possible.
Removal Day
Our crew arrives with the proper equipment for the site, depending on what the job needs: a chip truck, bucket truck, aerial lift, articulating loader, or mini-skid steer. We keep your lawn safe with heavy-duty mats wherever the equipment has to drive.
Cleanup & Walk-Through
We chip brush on site and can leave usable wood cut into firewood lengths if you'd like it. If not, we'll haul it away. Once the work is complete, we thoroughly clean the site and, if you're home, walk the property with you to ensure everything meets your expectations.
Wood & Debris
What Happens to the Wood and Brush?
We don't leave you with a mess. Every removal includes a plan for the debris — and you decide what stays and what goes.
Wood Chips
Brush is chipped on site. We can haul chips away, leave them in a pile, or place them in a wooded area if access allows.
Firewood
Want to keep it? We cut logs into manageable lengths and stack them in a designated spot.
Full Cleanup
Prefer everything gone? We haul away all wood and debris, leaving the area clean and ready for what's next.
What About the Stump?
By default, stump grinding is not included in tree removal. It’s a separate service, listed on its own line in your estimate. Most clients add stump grinding to their removal job, so the work is done in one visit.
Our stump grinding service brings the stump down four to six inches below grade, getting rid of the eyesore and tripping hazard. We can also fill the consequential hole with grindings if you so choose.

A little prep goes a long way in helping the job run smoothly and safely.
Permits
Do You Need a Permit to Remove a Tree in Vermont?
In Vermont, most tree removal jobs don't need a permit. The major exception is shoreline work.
Shoreland Permits
Vermont Shoreland Protection Act requires a permit for tree removal within 250 feet of any lake larger than 10 acres.
We handle the complete process for permit application for our shoreline clients, so you don’t have to deal with the paperwork yourself.
Local Requirements
Some towns have further requirements for tree removal in specific zones, such as historic districts, conservation overlays, or planned developments. We’ll tell you during your consultation if your property has any local requirements that need addressing.
