Great Trees Start with Planting It Right

Twenty years ago was the best time to plant a tree but today is a close second—only if you plant the right species in the right spot, the right way. A tree chosen at random at some big store that’s dropped into an improperly prepared hole rarely becomes a great tree. At Limbwalker, planting is done with intention, from species selection to placement and installation, so your tree has the best chance to thrive long-term.

Planting Done Right

Our Tree Planting Services

Whether you’re filling a gap left by a removal, creating a privacy screen, or starting fresh on a new property, we can help you plan and plant it right. Some of the ways we help Vermont homeowners add trees to their landscape include:

  • New Tree Planting

We install balled-and-burlapped (B&B) and container-grown trees sourced from trusted wholesale nurseries. Bare-root installations aren’t practical in our region, so we don’t offer them. Every planting project starts with a consultation and plan.

  • Species Selection Consultation

Picking the right tree is the most important decision of tree planting projects. We guide you through an in-depth selection process based on what matters to you—such as mature size, fall color, bloom, growth rate, longevity, fruit, and how the tree will fit the site—and usually present three to five options that would do well.

  • Privacy & Screening Plantings

Arborvitae and spruce are our go-to species for creating privacy screens, windbreaks, and property-line plantings. We help you think through spacing, long-term growth, and sightlines, so the screen works today and a decade down the line.

  • Small-Tree Transplanting

For smaller trees already on your property that you’d like to relocate, we can move them by hand using traditional shovel techniques. We assess root size, timing, and placement to give the tree the best chance of re-establishing successfully in its new location.

Our Tree Planting Process

Planting is more than digging a hole. Here’s how we handle it from start to finish:

Site Consultation

An ISA Certified Arborist visits your property to evaluate the site’s soil conditions, drainage, sun exposure, nearby trees and structures, and underground utilities. We talk through your goals for the planting.

Species Recommendation

Based on your site and goals, we come back with three to five potential species options. Each recommendation includes the tree’s mature size, seasonal traits, growth rate, expected longevity, and any other things worth knowing—like if it drops fruit, attracts wildlife, or needs more water than most.

Sourcing

Once a species is chosen, we source the tree from one of our trusted wholesale nurseries. We examine every tree before we accept it. If a tree comes with poor structure, girdled roots, or stress damage, we send it back.

Planting Day

We dig the hole to the right size and depth and set the tree at the proper height because a tree planted too deep is a tree planted to fail. Then, we backfill the native soil and mulch properly. Dig Safe is called ahead of time on any site where underground utilities may be an issue.

Aftercare Setup & Follow-up

Every new tree leaves our hands with a watering bag installed and written care instructions tailored specifically to the species. The bag should be filled twice a week during the initial growing season. That is the most important thing you can do to help establish the tree.

Thinking About Planting a Tree? Skip Doing It Yourself

A tree is a long-term investment. Plant it wrong and you’ll have to pay for that mistake for years—or, you’ll have to dig it out and start over.

We’re ISA Certified Arborists who have planted trees all over the Champlain Valley. We know which species thrive in which towns, which nurseries deliver healthy stock, and what is needed to establish a tree in Vermont’s short growing season.

Setting Trees Up for Success

When Is the Best Time to Plant a Tree in Vermont?

Vermont has two ideal planting windows: spring and fall. Planting during these seasons gives your tree the best chance to establish before facing heat, drought, or winter stress.

Spring Planting (April-May)

Spring planting takes advantage of the full growing season ahead. Roots establish through the summer and fall before the trees go dormant, giving it a solid head start. Soil conditions after the ground thaws are generally ideal.

Fall Planting (September-October)

Fall is arguably the best time to plant in our region. Cooler temperatures, more consistent rainfall, and warm soil mean roots keep growing even after the leaves fall. Fall-planted trees generally outperform spring-planted ones in their second year.

Summer (Jun–Aug)

Summer planting is possible, but success depends on species selection and consistent watering. In many cases, waiting until fall provides better growing conditions and stronger establishment.

Winter (Nov–Mar)

Frozen ground makes planting impractical, but winter is the ideal time to plan ahead. Many successful spring and fall planting projects begin with winter consultations.

Planting with the Future in Mind

Why Choose Limbwalker for Tree Planting

Most tree planting is treated as a quick install. Ours is approached as long-term tree care. Here’s what sets Limbwalker apart:

Arborist in a safety vest using a measuring tape to assess the diameter of a tree trunk

Arborist-Led, Not Sales-Led

Species selection and site assessment are done by a qualified arborist and not a landscaper, crew lead, or sales rep. The same person who walks your property helps you pick out the right tree and oversees its installation.

We Stand Behind Every Tree We Plant

If a tree fails to establish and grow after we plant it, we’ll replace it. The guarantee is not time-limited; we stand behind the planting until the tree is on its way. Trees damaged by plows, mowers, or similar property accidents are not covered.

Recommendations Built for Your Property

We don’t show up with a truck full of whatever trees we have on hand. We come with recommendations specifically tailored to your property, goals, and what we know will grow well. If the best option for your site is a species we have to specifically order, we’ll let you know.

We’re Here Beyond the Planting

Planting is just the beginning. We’ll help you get your tree established, and we’re here for the years that follow with pruning, plant health care, and ongoing support as it grows.
