What It Takes to Keep a Great Tree Healthy Long-Term
Limbwalker’s arborist services are the specialized work that keeps your trees healthy, structurally sound, and thriving for years to come. Whether it’s reinforcing a mature maple that’s starting to split, improving the soil around a declining oak, or protecting your ash trees from emerald ash borer, these are the services that make a difference between a tree that lasts and one that doesn’t.
Unsure about what your tree needs? We provide complimentary on-site consultations throughout Addison, Chittenden, Franklin, and Grand Isle counties.
For Trees Facing Specific Challenges
Specialized Tree Care Services
Limbwalker’s ISA Certified Arborists routinely diagnose and address the issues that most commonly affect trees across western Vermont and the Champlain Valley. We’ll identify early warning signs and implement targeted solutions before small problems become big ones.
Cabling & Bracing
Large maples, willows, oaks, and pines throughout the Champlain Valley tend to grow expansive canopies with multiple stems and weak branch attachments. When a tree grows in full sun with zero competition, individual branches can become co-dominant stems, each carrying a major portion of the canopy across unions that are structurally vulnerable.
Our cabling and bracing service provides structural support for trees with split or weakened branch unions. This preventive measure can often save a tree that might otherwise have to come down.
When it’s needed:
- A visible crack is forming where two large stems meet.
- A heavy limb extends over your house, driveway, or other structure.
- There are multiple stems that seem to be pulling apart.
- You want to maintain the form and shade of a tree instead of removing it.
Limbwalker uses steel cables for rigid structural support. If pruning alone can resolve the issue, we’ll recommend that instead. A cable redistributes stress, but it doesn’t completely eliminate risk. It’s a method of ongoing assistance the tree will always need. We recommend re-evaluation by an arborist every five years following installation.
Root Crown Excavations
A root crown excavation is one of the most diagnostic services we provide. We carefully remove soil and excess mulch from the base of a tree to expose the root flare, where the trunk meets the root system. This is where we find problems that aren’t visible from above.
We look for:
- Girdling roots wrapped around the tree’s vascular system
- Mulch volcanoes burying the root collar
- Buried root flares with no visible trunk-to-ground transition
You receive:
- Removal of excess soil and mulch volcanoes
- Identification and cutting of girdling roots
- A detailed written report with photos, analysis, and recommendations
Girdling roots are some of the most common root problems we see on properties across Vermont. They’re almost always invisible until the tree is already in a great decline.
Soil Improvement
In many cases, trees need improved soil structure instead of generic fertilizer. Limbwalker doesn’t apply synthetic fertilizers to trees. Research shows that standard fertilization can encourage rapid shoot growth that correlates with the increased presence of insects.
Our approach:
- Increase the mulch area around the base of the declining tree
- Integrate organic materials like biochar or compost
- Duplicate forest-floor conditions where organic matter decomposes in place
- Focus on long-term soil biology, not short-term growth spurts
This isn’t a recurring annual service. Once organic materials are in place, they work over time. We’ll show you how to maintain the mulch layer without piling material against the root collar.
Tree Inventory
Limbwalker provides tree inventory services for homeowners, HOAs, and municipalities. We give every tree a numbered ID tag and catalog them by common and scientific name, then deliver a PDF report documenting each tree on the property.
A tree inventory is helpful when you’re:
- Tracking ash trees and other at-risk species across a property
- Scheduling and prioritizing pruning, removal, and replanting
- Planning for species diversity in new plantings
- Establishing a documented baseline before construction or property improvement
We recommend updating your inventory as tree work is completed, so the record stays current and useful over time.
Trunk Injections for Emerald Ash Borer
Emerald ash borer (EAB) has been confirmed across Vermont and is actively killing ash trees throughout the Champlain Valley. If you want to keep your ash tree alive, treatment has to happen before major damage occurs.
Treatments are done on a cycle of two years. We contact you every January or February to confirm and schedule, so there’s no guessing on your end. EAB treatment represents almost all of our plant health care work. We don’t use blanket pesticide programs. We focus on targeted treatments that are proven to work, applied when they’re actually needed.
